Coquina

Coquina is an incompletely consolidated sedimentary rock. It is mainly composed of mineral calcite, often including some phosphate, in the form of seashells or coral. It has been used in building stone in Florida for over 400 years. For example, coquina forms the walls of the Castillo de San Marcos in Saint Augustine, this country's oldest city. The stone made a very good material for forts, particularly those built during the period of heavy cannon use. Because of coquina's softness, cannon balls would sink into, rather than shatter or puncture, the walls of the Castillo de San Marcos. Coquina is a true shell stone with swirls of shells throughout. Being a true shell stone, Coquina is naturally cool to the touch, and therefore makes an ideal pool and patio stone. DM Decos by Design, Inc. stocks this material in tile format, pool coping, pavers, moldings and mosaics in a range of finishes.  This product can be special ordereed in various sizes and thicknesses and it can be fabricated into many different architectural items such as fireplaces, fountains, window and door surrounds and more.
